Therapy with Me

Therapy can be many things

Therapy, in my view, can be a place to pause — to explore your values, needs, and feelings, and to heal. It is also an invitation to build spaciousness and safety, to reorient, wonder, and try on new ways of seeing yourself and your life.

Rather than fix or "cure," my aim is to create a trustworthy space where you can move toward fuller expression, connection, and creativity.

Every therapist works from some philosophy, whether or not they name it. I bring together several currents of theoretical and philosophical training — Buddhist psychology, narrative therapy, existential psychology, and sociocultural systems theories are foundational to my work. My integrative, interdisciplinary approach is rooted in the following ideas:

(To learn more about these philosophical and theoretical orientations, please go to here, also found at the end of this page.)

We are interconnected beings, living life in multiple, intersecting contexts

The work of healing is uniquely one's own, and at the same time, deeply relational. From our first breath, we are thrown into a complex weave of shaping contexts — at once biological, familial, cultural, sociopolitical, and historical. These contexts hold both our sources of strength and connection, and our experiences of difficulty and oppression.

Our worlds — that is, our coping, our suffering, and our connecting, all of our expressions and experiences — are shaped within layered and overlapping contexts. As situated, interconnected beings, we're hurt in relationship, and we heal in relationship too.

We need each other. Connection and growth happen throughout the lifespan — connection with oneself is not above but "on par with" connection with others, and is contextual.

We shape, we create, we author, we heal and grow in and through relationships with ourselves, others, and our worlds

An exploration might be: what ancestry, or what shared stories and histories, do you wish to honor, to know and understand better or differently? What parts do you wish to be free from, make peace with, mourn, and let go?

Our body and mind as one hold important information and inner wisdom

We can learn to listen to, work with, and integrate this wisdom — with patience, practice, trust, and compassion, over time and with support. Getting in and being with our bodies — listening to our nervous system, our breath, our automatic responses, and our stories — can happen in many ways.

You are the expert on your life

Our work is always tailored to what you know works for you. Together, we'll build a trusting space where you can speak freely and authentically. Coming into fuller self-expression lets us access more of ourselves — for our own sake, our relationships, and the wider world. I believe this is some of our most courageous work, and part of why we're here.

Change — even change we want — can still knock us off balance. Often a crisis or life transition becomes the catalyst for knowing ourselves with more understanding and compassion. In my own life, therapy has held all of this and more during times of crisis, grief, and struggle.

My approach is warm, curious, and direct — I bring humility, humor, and gentle challenge

I bring a genuine curiosity about who you are. I work collaboratively with your strengths and what you bring, sometimes reflecting back what I'm hearing, sometimes offering language, tools, or frameworks drawn from specific therapy models.

The first few sessions will involve a comprehensive evaluation and exploration of your needs. We'll discuss our initial impressions and outline the direction of what our work may include. You may or may not have clarity about your wishes for therapy — either way, we'll discuss and create a plan for our work together, one we'll refine and deepen as new possibilities and desires unfold.

Open communication is essential to our work together. You always have the right to disagree with me, offer feedback, and ask me questions about our process whenever they arise. My clinical judgment, along with an understanding of otherness and the power dynamics that shape our interactions, sits alongside your wishes and needs. I will be curious, present, and focused on creating a safe space with you as we navigate the unknown together.

What matters most is that you feel comfortable working with me — that you feel heard and safe to talk about whatever's on your mind. That trust builds over time as we get to know each other, finding ways — perhaps honing skills — that support staying curious through our work together.

I will listen to you and walk alongside you

Therapy is a collaborative experience and process. I bring my repertoire of skills into collaboration with your strengths and what you bring. We may grapple with difficult or challenging emotions and experiences. This kind of work — where practices such as learning to listen to oneself, and increasing one's capacity to be with discomfort and acceptance — may be hard, and also relieving, playful, and empowering. Whatever brings you to therapy, your ongoing sense of how our work is landing is central to building a trusting container together. We'll check in on that regularly.

A key aspect of my personal ethics is to attend to my presence, with the belief that trust in our therapeutic relationship is earned through how I hold myself in the space we co-create. Please find more on my ethical commitments here. here.
